The Alliance Française of Asmara opened in 1993 when Eritrea reached independance. It contributes to the spreading of the French culture and promotes cultural exchanges between France and Eritrea. It is the main place in Asmara for learning French.

The Alliance Française is a local association directed by a franco-eritrean Executive Committee.

It is located in two different buildings : the first one is dedicated to the library and the administration, and the second one, the Centre Joseph Kessel, is where the classes and the cultural events take place.
